Habits are like thoughts. Chose the good ones.

I don’t get it.
From a very young age the whole world has been busy teaching me habits and in the end all I have accumulated is a bunch of bad habits that don’t serve me at all.

I learnt to

  • do things at the last moment with the least effort possible
  • doing things only when I am told to
  • cheat
  • find shortcuts in everything I do
  • go to work and become a robot
  • being busy to look good
  • only be hungry and eat at certain times
  • think little but produce lots.

And I can go on and on and on showing many more bad habits I have learnt.
Of course I have learnt some good ones as well, but that is not what I am talking about here.
Do I think that those old habits that are driving me today, serve the new paradigm of manifesting desires?

I don’t think so.

I compare it with hygiene habits in the 19th century.
Yeah, people got into the habit of washing their hands but for a long time they didn’t see that washing the sheets and the medical instruments was important too.

Sounds silly?
Of course; but I am afraid that the next generation will have some stories to tell about our current inadequate habits too.
Some of our current habits relating to manifesting are just as much out of whack and counter productive as those historical medical ones, I am sure.

And if you don’t believe me look at how some people describe habits and how that relates to what we are doing right now.

A habit is something you can do without thinking – which is why most of us have so many of them. ~Frank A. Clark
I say if you don’t think about them, they are hard to spot and change.
I’ve seen people turning on the television as soon as they got home, not to watch but just out of habit! Imagine the stuff that unconsciously is reaching your brain; all the media hype that goes in unnoticed!
We are wasting a lot of time talking about media hype that distracts us and does nothing to add to our quality of life.
All it does is eat up our precious time, while more time is what we want to manifest?!

The unfortunate thing about this world is that good habits are so much easier to give up than bad ones. ~Somerset Maugham
To make a point, I will NOT give up my two morning coffees.
I am not so fastidious about exercises!
What about giving up watching television and being still and thinking about your desire as Wallace D Wattles explains in his ‘Science of getting Rich’ instead?
At the moment we want it both, watching DVDs and miraculously applying the “science of getting rich”.

Men’s natures are alike; it is their habits that separate them. ~Confucius
Am I carefully watching the habits of people who are joyfully manifesting their desires so I no longer am separated from that group?
I am getting there, but not until it was pointed out to me several times that developing effective daily habits is leverage.
Are you looking to find and then replace your bad habits to end your separation from the people who live a great life?

Reading these quotes got me seriously thinking about habits and how they shape my life.

In book Seven of the Ringing Cedar Series ‘The Energy of Life’ there are some examples of the difference developing good habits can make in shaping your future, your life.

One is a story about two poor Russian girls who want to get ahead in life.
The girls are dreaming up a joyful prosperous life and marrying well to do, loving men.
Then the story goes on to tell that besides holding on to their dreams, they are also very intentional in developing habits that are congruent with women who are already living a married prosperous life.
They learn to dress well, they learn to speak only with good purpose and are extending their vocabulary for example.

The next crucial thing they do is making these things habitual so they do them naturally all the time without thinking.
That means their well to do men can arrive anytime, anywhere.
They can never be caught out unexpectedly, showing bad habits and thus losing their chance of happiness.
They have become congruent, are always ready to recognize and receive their manifestation and are ready to slot into and cope immediately with the lifestyle once it is manifested!

When I read this story the first time I didn’t think much of it, but after reading it a second time it made a lot of sense.

It also answered the question; “Why do some big lotto winners lose all their money?”
Could it be because they did not prepare themselves by replacing their yearning habits with the habits of wealthy prosperous people and thus failed to slot into the lifestyle they dreamed of?

Looking at myself; what habits am I developing that will have me create and slot into my manifestation?

Here are some examples.

Am I in the habit of creating vacuums so new stuff can keep arriving when I want it?
A great exercise during Leverage & You was to clear out my wardrobe.
Seeing that there is place for new stuff is all you need for new clothes to arrive!

Am I completing things so I let the Universe know that I am ready to move on to new stuff?
Yes, we did complete doing up the house ready to move on and yes we did talk about the next steps when the house didn’t sell, without going into a space of no possibility.

Letting go of and completing the past is another fantastic habit to develop when aiming to manifest a future according to the new paradigm.
There are a lot of old habits that are invisible and inherited from the past.
Some are from my days as an employee.
I had a hard time developing the habit of taking ownership for my roles as a prosperous business owner.

Like thoughts, habits might have a lot more to do with manifesting than we think.
To quote Mike Dooley, “chose the good ones!”

  1. “…developing effective daily habits is leverage.”

So very true and the main reason that most goal-setting has you focus on the immediate habits to develop that will get you to the long-term habits that get you to the Big Goals…

@Alex. I found it interesting to see that habits even relate to how we think…love Wilma

Yeah, I agree, the whole goal setting things has got me up and awake when noticing habits that do not align with my goals in trading. What I notice is that if I perform a task that is directly related to moving forward with my goals I then suddenly have this huge influx of distracting thoughts (the man sitting on my left shoulder with the pitchfork and horns.) The one with the halo on my right shoulder seems to have a lot of trouble balancing there let alone whispering in my ear.

Seriously though, it is interesting to notice those thoughts coming up when challenging it all with conscious goals and choosing the good ones as Mike Dooley points out.

Without goals my left shoulder is always heavy and I stepped on the halo guy on my right when he fell off.

@Blair. THAT is a bad habit, stepping on the good guy with halo :)
and I agree, developing good habits of staying on tasks helps.

    thanks Wilma…
when I’m setting my goals I try and also set one new habit to develop every couple of months and focus on that.. but some ’stick’ and some don’t ( yoga stretches every couple of mornings; easy… meditate every couple of mornings; not happening!) and I haven’t figured out why that is yet….
